Lloyd Cole-Felt
Luck didn't come into it. Commotions had a sound that was more radio
friendly in 83 and beyond. Felt's real chance came when Blanco y Negro
wanted to sign them, but then backed out. Primitive Painters went to number
one in the indie charts for 5 or 6 weeks and was the biggest selling indie
single of the year. Lawrence later gloated, albeit ruefully, that the major
would've had a hit if they'd signed Felt. They would, but whether they
would've sustained a chart career is in question. For one thing, Liz Fraser
was probably responsible for at least half of the sales of Primitive
Painters.
The most commercial Felt got was with Mobile Shack - baggy beats just a bit
too late to the party.
